WAPIs - Unsafe drinking water

These are the facts:

  • Water-related diseases are responsible for 80% of all illnesses and deaths in the developing world.
  • An estimated 1.5 billion cases of diarrhea occur each year, resulting in the death of nearly 2 million children.
  • Worldwide, about 1.3 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water, including nearly half of the population of sub-Sahara Africa.

Now imagine that you can make a difference.  And on Feb. 7, you can.

Rotaract District 5160 is hosting a WAPI Build Day to combat water-related diseases due to unsafe drinking water.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 7TIME: 11 AM – 2 PM

WHERE: Berkeley, CA. Exact location TBA.

WHO CAN ATTEND: Anyone!  We encourage you to bring friends and family to this great event, regardless of their involvement in Rotary and Rotaract.  We will have participants from throughout Northern California.

COST: Completely free.  Simply bring a willingness for fun and great service.

Light food and drinks will be provided.

WAPI–a reusable Water Pasteurization Indicator–is a simple, low-cost device that can be used to determine when water has reached pasteurization temperatures.

Proper pasteurization destroys disease-causing organisms in contaminated milk and water and prevents the unnecessary use of precious resources (i.e. fuel and wood for cooking).  Most importantly, proper pasteurization can save lives.

On Feb. 7, you will learn how to build these devices from scratch.  The WAPIs that you build will be delivered directly to the families in need throughout the world.  We invite you to make a difference.
