Rotary Dictionary Project | Berkeley

Berkeley Rotary is donating hundreds of dictionaries to all the 3rd graders in our local elementary schools. They are looking for help in delivering these dictionaries to these children. What you would do is help carry these dictionaries to these schools and give a little speech about what Rotary is and why they are doing this for the children. The schedule for deliveries is as follows:

OCT 3 | Volleyball Skill Drills at R.O.C.K. | San Francisco

About R.O.C.K.
Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.) aims to promote the positive development and long-term success of the youth that it serves through a combination of in-school and after school learning enrichment, sports and fitness, leadership training and outdoor adventure opportunities. ROCK’s programs are designed to serve girls and boys, ages 6-17, who live in or attend school in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley. The mission of ROCK is to nurture the healthy development of children by listening attentively to their needs and by providing opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access.
About the Event
At ROCK, we’ll work with lead activities and accompany kids as they play volleyball games, rotate through stations, and “compete” in practice games. It’s all about creating a healthy and fun environment!

What is Microcredit?
Microcredit is the lending of small loans to unemployed entrepreneurs in third world countries who do not have access to collateral or verifiable financial history. With these small loans, entrepreneurs can purchase enterprise and capital to start up or enhance their own businesses.

POLIO:
- Has no cure, only a successful preventative vaccine that often costs no more than $0.60 per dose
- Eradicated in all but four countries of the world–Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, and India
- Manages to paralyze hundreds of children internationally through trade and travel, and it will paralyze over 10 MILLION children in the next 40 years if we do not eradicate it NOW.
POLIOPLUS:
- For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease
- This year, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has put Rotary International up to a challenge: raise $200 million for an ultimate $555 million grant to eliminate polio, once and for all
- This semester we’ll be hosting a campus-wide late-night Amazing Race, videogame tournament, and the ever-popularPurple Pinkie Week to help Rotary Int’l meet the Challenge and finally eradicate polio from the world

At our 9/22 Rotaract meeting, Rotaractors were sorted in one of four AMAZING families. Families are smaller groups within Rotaract that allow for members to interact and get to know each other in a more intimate setting.
Why families?
Our goal is to increase and promote close-knit friendships within the club. Being active in your family is a fun and rewarding way to get more involved in Rotaract. You and your family can also win prizes (and bragging rights!) for being an active Rotaract member.

SEPT 27 | Greening Rockridge Out & About | Rockridge, Oakland

For one magical afternoon, 10 blocks are transformed into a street fair featuring live music, cooking demonstrations, artisans and food booths, arts, crafts and kids activities.
What Rotaract is helping out with is making sure everyone knows about composting and recycling and other facts to reduce waste. Help the planet out and enjoy the many festivities going on at the Out & About Rockridge festival!

Bay Area Reading Partners


The Bay Area Reading Partner program will be working with students as soon as next week!
All you need to do to schedule your first session at Berkley Maynard is to complete their online orientation. The orientation should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
The online orientation can be found at http://readingpartners.org/nto
After you complete the online orientation, you will be contacted to schedule a shadow session, your first chance to visit your local Reading Partners center.

- Starting our very fun Rotaract Families
- Getting your long awaited T-shirts and pins (if you have not received both yet)
- And a lot more!
Remember, if you want to become a member, you can bring your dues if you have not already, ($7 per semester or $10 for a year) to our lovely Treasurer, Asha, at the meeting.

SEPT 17 | FREE LSAT SEMINAR | ALUMNI HOUSE, BECHTEL ROOM

The Cal Pre-Law Association is hosting a free LSAT seminar for all Berkeley students interested in applying to law school. Colin Elzie, LSAT master and veteran instructor for Blueprint LSAT Preparation, will:
- discuss the format of the LSAT
- cover real sample problems
- teach the best methods for tackling this difficult test
The LSAT is the single most important factor in law school admissions, so don’t miss this free opportunity to learn more! There will also be FREE PIZZA! yum!
