PIMP YO’ PUMPKIN

Cal Rotaract is saving the victimized pumpkins from the ugly pumpkin evil by carving into them cool designs!

WHY?

So, the pumpkins actually do not need saving, but they do need to look cool and BE SOLD. Cal Rotaract will be coming together as a group to have fun designing a bunch of pumpkins to sell to Berkeley Rotary Members at our Rotary-Rotaract Mixer.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a professional pumpkin carver to come and participate. We just want you to come out and have fun with other Rotaractors and work your creativity on the pumpkins.

We will have pumpkins for you to carve, but you can bring your own pumpkin that you wanted decorated for your apartment/dorm and carve it with us!

DETAILS:

  • WHEN: Sunday, October 25th, 5-7pm
  • WHERE: 88 Dwinelle

See these cool stuffed animals?

Do you know where they came from?

Yes, that’s right, they are top quality, ROTARACT-hand-made, huggable stuffed animals!

WHERE ARE THEY GOING?

And we’re continuing this project but adding an internationial twist to it. Now, we’re donating the stuffed animals as the first installation of “Baby Packs” that we’re making and sending to mothers and children of a village in Jaragua, Brazil. So these stuffed animals will go in kits that would be sent to the village we’re “adopting” in Jaragua, Brazil.

GUESTS:

ALSO, one more thing: UC Davis Rotaractors will be joining us for this effort, so don’t miss out on an opportunity to meet with other Rotaractors that are just as cool and fun as you are!

DETAILS:

  • WHEN: Saturday October, 24th, 11am-2pm
  • WHERE: 220 Wheeler

JOIN US FOR A NIGHT OF COMPETITION, VICTORY, AND FIGHTING POVERTY.

Hey, you know what’s cool? Capture the Flag.

What’s cooler? Capture the Flag. At night. Campuswide.

This Friday, we’re splitting into two teams and battling it out on campus. Let’s see who steals whose flag first!

EVENT DETAILS

WHEN: Friday, October 23
TIME: 8 – 10 pm
MEET: 179 Dwinelle. It begins!
WHERE: Campus-wide… it’s going to be wicked cool.
DONATIONS sliding scale of $3-5. Remember – the more we raise, the more lives we can change! :]
MORE INFO: Facebook or Email

**All proceeds will go towards Cal Rotaract’s Microcredit Committee. Learn more about the cause below!**

WHAT’S MICROCREDIT? WHY SHOULD I CARE?

+ 840 million people in the world don’t get enough to eat. That’s one of every seven people.

+ An estimated 2.1 billion people in the world live on less than $2 per day.

+ 880 million live on less than $1 a day.

+ Due to preventable poverty, disease, and hunger, 26,000 children perish every day.

First and foremost, microcredit is something real YOU can do to change this.

Microcredit is the lending of small loans to unemployed entrepreneurs in third world countries who do not have access to collateral or verifiable financial history. With these small loans, entrepreneurs can purchase enterprise and capital to start up or enhance their own businesses.

Translation? We change lives by 1. providing opportunities where there currently aren’t any; and 2. allowing people to make a difference & sustain that difference on their own!

Some call it THE GIRL EFFECT.

DONATING TO MICROCREDIT

For this great event, we ask that you only donate $3-5 (a sliding scale – meaning you choose what you want to donate).

But we also encourage that you read the facts above and see that this is a real way to make a difference: ask your friends, floormates, & classmates for $1 to go to this great cause, and bring that on Friday.

As much as this event is about raising funds for a good cause, it’s also about spreading the word and raising awareness. Get the word out about poverty. Share these numbers. Make a difference. Encourage others to do the same.

We appreciate it. As do the beneficiaries of this project!

QUESTIONS?

Email all questions and suggestions to Chairs Steven & Cynthia at microcredit@calrotaract.org.

Postponed | WAPI Build Day | TBD

Oct 17, 2009   //   by Steven   //   International Service  //  No Comments

WAPI

WAPIs - Unsafe drinking water

The facts:

  • Water-related diseases are responsible for 80% of all illnesses and deaths in the developing world.
  • An estimated 1.5 billion cases of diarrhea occur each year, resulting in the death of nearly 2 million children.
  • Worldwide, about 1.3 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water, including nearly half of the population of sub-Sahara Africa.

How you can make the difference:

  • Help Rotaract build Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPIs) so that EVERYONE can enjoy safe water without wasting energy and money

What is a WAPI?

A WAPI is an indicator for when water has become safe to drink (pasteurtized). It is a wax-filled plastic tube and washers strung with fishing line that acts as a simple thermometer. It is common to heat water until it boils as indication that it is safe, however pasteurization temperature is much lower (65 degrees Celsius, 149 degrees Fahrenheit). Being able to know when water reaches this level is important so that the water is safe to drink and energy/fuel is not wasted.

DETAILS:

  • WHEN: October 24, 11-2pm
  • WHERE: TBD
