end-of-year-banquet

Its that time of year!

…no, not Thanksgiving

…nor Christmas….

…not Hanukkah…

…sorry, not Kwanza either….

Yes, you almost guessed it, but that is okay because:

It’s the Cal Rotaract Fall Banquet!

It is almost the Cal Rotaract End-of-the-Year Banquet! There will be delicious food and a really fun mystery gift exchange called White Elephant! It will be a lot of fun and its all for YOU, our awesome members. It is a celebration to reward your efforts this semester, so there will be super cool member appreciation gifts for official members and other opportunities for prizes! Remember, you have to be a paid member to be eligible for the prizes, but it is not too late to become an official member! You can bring your dues to the banquet and receive a Cal Rotaract T-shirt and pin.

What is White Elephant?

So White Elephant is a gift exchange game where everyone brings a gift and wraps it. They are anonymously put in the center of the room and people begin picking one by one with the option of stealing a gift too. The game ends when everyone who brought a gift has a gift. More details will be explained at the banquet!

Here are the basic instructions for White Elephant:

  • Bring a gift ($5 value, min)! Find it at home, or go out and buy one! Gifts can be humorous or used items from home that are still in good condition as long as it meets minimum price requirements.
  • Wrap your gift! You can easily get gift wrap at Dollar Store or use your creativity.
  • Do not write your name on your gift

In August 2009, Typhoon Morakot, the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history, swept through the island, leaving behind $3.3 billion in damages. Then in September and October, a series of earthquakes and typhoons devastated many countries in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines and Vietnam. The first earthquake hit Indonesia on September 30, 2009 measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, and second earthquake hit the following morning, measuring 6.8. Soon after, four typhoons, Ketsana, Parma, Lupit, and Mirinae, devastated the Philippines in a span of a month, causing massive flooding and landslides and the evacuation of more than 100,000 people.

NOV. 7: Rotary at the UN Day, NYC

UN Day
Rotary Day at the United Nations: Nov. 7

Start your planning, Cal Rotaract! We’re invited to attend the upcoming Rotary Day at the United Nations program on November 7, at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

Rotary Day at the UN
November 7, 2009
UN Headquarters, NY
8 am – 4:30 pm

About the Program

Rotary Day at the UN has evolved into one of the most interesting, substantive and enjoyable programs that brings together Rotary and UN leaders to discuss some of each organization’s unique humanitarian programs and to identify potential areas of future cooperation. The mutually productive working relationship between Rotary and the UN, which is over 63 years old, is highlighted through many successful programs , such as the phenomenal Polioplus Program to eliminate the scourge of polio, reducing adult illiteracy, battling the AIDS epidemic and confronting climate change, to mention only a few.

How to Register

Register online: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/383749806
Download the student registration form: http://www.riunday.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/2009_Registration_Form_-_Young_Rotarians.19180741.pdf

Registration is due Oct. 23.

Brief History: Rotary & The UN

In 1942, Rotary clubs from 21 nations organized a conference in London to develop a vision for advancing education, science, and culture after World War II. That event was a precursor to UNESCO. In 1945, 49 Rotarians went to San Francisco to help draft the UN Charter. Rotary and the UN have been close partners ever since, a relationship that’s apparent through PolioPlus and work with UN agencies.

For More Information

Visit http://www.riunday.org/ or email Brad Jenkins, primary RI representative to the UN in New York, for further information.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this outstanding program! It is not too early to make hotel and airline reservations since there are so many activities in the New York area that weekend.
