July 27 | [Tomodachi Initiative] Great Big WAPI Build | 12-5PM | Clark Kerr Grand Courtyard

Jul 9, 2012   //   by calrotar   //   Announcements  //  No Comments

Who: You, Cal students, Rotaractors, and Rotarians!

What: Come out to the Cal Rotaract/Tomodachi Initiative Great Big WAPI build where we’ll be playing the role of WAPI building instructors and event coordinators for 300 visiting Japanese youth.

Where and When: Meet at the Clark Kerr Grand Courtyard at 12 pm for WAPI building training. There will be 350 seats being set up so it shouldn’t be too hard to miss. Contact 916-690-0545 if you need help.

Why: The Tomodachi initiative is a public-private partnership that supports Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, and invests in the next generation of Japanese and Americans in ways that strengthen cultural and economic ties, and deepen the friendship between the U.S. and japan over the long-term.

WAPIs, pasteurization indicators that assist in saving fuel and preventing waterborn illnesses, have been an important ongoing component of Rotaract’s service repetoire. By building WAPIs together, we will play an important part in deepening the friendship between us Americans and the Japanese over our mutual desire to help others.

We hope to see you out here for an afternoon of summer service and international fellowship!

P.S. Don’t forget to stick around the 30,000+ Kite Festival later this weekend! If you’re from out of the area, let us know if you need temporary housing or transportation accommodations!

July 28-29 | 27th Annual Berkeley Kite Festival! | 9AM-4PM | Berkeley Marina

SIGN UP HERE!

The 27th Annual Berkeley Kite Festival will be held on Saturday and
Sunday, July 28 and 29. The Festival itself is one of the largest in
North America, with perhaps 30-40,000 people attending. It runs from 10
to 5, officially, but there will be kites flying well outside of those
hours! Click here for more info on the Festival!

The Rotary Club is responsible for running the parking at the Marina for
the event, under a contract with the City. We will have free shuttles,
generously provided by Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, that circulate
between the Marina lots and the event all day. There is additional paid
parking at the Golden Gate Fields Racetrack north parking lot, with free
shuttle service to the event. *There will NOT be any shuttles to
Spengers and North Berkeley BART station this year!!!*

Generally, our work shifts are 9-2; 130-530; or 11-4, both days. We can
be flexible if someone needs to work odd hours! We usually need the most
people in the middle of the day, as it is slow between 9 and about 10 or
so, and after about 3. We usually have more trouble getting full
staffing on Sunday than on Saturday. We will be staffing 5 lots this year!

There also will be setup on *Wednesday the 25th*, (changed from
Thursday the 26th) from about *9am to 12 noon***, (changed from the
afternoon), and Friday from 5-6pm, and then teardown on Sunday, 5-630.
We are looking for an extra pickup truck for these three times as well!
