Hello Rotaractors!

Our LAST General Meeting has been postponed to next Tuesday, Nov 22nd, 7PM at 2040 VLSB!

I. 2012 Board of Officers Applications

As the semester’s coming to a close, the end of one term also marks the beginning of a new start as we open the applications for a new Officers Board for Cal Rotaract for the year 2012. All board positions will be a 1 year commitment (Jan-Dec) starting next spring semester. Semester long Committee Chair positions for our Local, National, and International service sectors will also be open to members as well so make sure to check out our website calrotaract.org to download the respective forms!

We ask that all applications be submitted by email to applications@calrotaract.org by Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at 12:00pm.
1st round selections will be announced that Saturday night and we will schedule interviews with selected applicants according to their chosen time preference checked in their application.

II. Rotaract Retreat: Lake Tahoe

When: Sunday, Dec 4th to Monday, Dec 5th (We will leave Sunday morning and return Monday afternoon)
Where: Lake Tahoe!
Cost: Est. $76.50 (Exact costs depend on how many people commit to going)
As the semester comes to a close, join Rotaract for a fun-filled weekend in Lake Tahoe for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, or just playing in the snow! The total cost will include transportation, lodging, and food (skiing/snowboarding not included) and a security deposit of $20 is due by the end of this week!

We will be following up with everyone within the next 2 days in order to collect deposits and finalize the head count so we can decide on the exact method of transportation.

III. Rotaract Banquet: Berkeley City Club

When: Thursday, Dec 1st, 7:00 – 9:00PM [**NOTE THE DATE CHANGE!**]
Where: The historic Berkeley City Club a block away from Unit 3! (2315 Durant Ave)
Cost: $15 for Paid Members; $20 for Guests
Come join us as we recap on a successful year of fundraising, service, and fellowship. Individual member recognition and decisions for the 2012 New Board will also be announced on this special night. So don’t miss out!

Make sure to purchase your ticket beforehand to reserve your dinner entree for one of the following options:
– - Hangar Steak with your choice of Cremini Mushrooms or Chimmichurri Sauce – -
OR
– - Pasta Primavera with a Basil Pesto Sauce and an assortment of fresh seasonal vegetables – -
Entrees will come with complimentary bread and butter at the tables, House Salad, Vegetable and Starch sides, and Dessert du Jour.
A drink bar will also be available to accompany your meal!

Not only will the dinner be hosted in the spacious Dining Hall, the garden spaces and patios will also be available to members to mingle and take pictures to commemorate a night of good food and good company.

We will be making Ticket Sales at the Last General Meeting on Tues, Nov 22nd! If you cannot make it to the meeting, please stop by the Rotaract Table on Sproul (Mon-Wed, 10AM – 2PM; Thurs 10AM – 1PM) to purchase your ticket.
** The deadline to reserve your dinner entree is Wednesday, Nov 23rd! **

Thanksgiving Baskets
Tues. Nov 22nd | 6:30 – 9:30AM | 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Way
Thanksgiving is around the corner and we need your help! The police department is having their annual turkey and food basket packing event, where all baskets will be given to needy families around the community. Come out bright and early to this fast-paced and fun event! Breakfast will be provided! Meet us at the Bancroft & Telegraph bus stop at 6:30AM to take the bus down to the police station together.

Last General Meeting: Spotlight on Water & Environmental Health

Holiday Cardmaking

Come hang out with local committee as we write holiday cards to the amazing seniors at Chaparral House! It’s time to start ringing in the holiday spirit, so what better way to do that than bring some joy to the elderly, show off your creative abilities, and hang with your friends? Please come support, the seniors will love any and all effort you put in!

Caroling for Seniors
Sat. Dec 3rd | 4:00 – 6:00PM | Chaparral House (1309 Allston Way)
Continue to provide holiday cheer with local committee as we make our way over to Chaparral House for a fun few hours of holiday song caroling and musical performances for senior citizens! We’ll try to have a practice day where we choose and go over some awesome songs that we can sing for them, and if you play piano or some other instrument, please join us in bringing some lovely holiday music to the elderly! Don’t worry, you don’t have to know how to sing or play anything, they’ll give us tons of support nonetheless!

A big thank you to everyone who came out to our General Meeting on Tuesday! We hope you enjoyed the parfaits and family time, and are excited for our upcoming Retreat! Our LAST general meeting will be on Tuesday, Nov. 15th, so please mark your calendars!

I. WHY JOIN ROTARACT?

Rotaract is an international service club for individuals between the ages of 18-30. As one of Rotary International’s official youth programs, members of Rotaract clubs (known as Rotaractors), are part of the world’s largest service organization. Rotaractors perform service both locally and internationally, changing the world one person at a time!

For those of you who are still unsure about joining Cal Rotaract, here are some key points to remember as to why we’re different from every other community service club out there!

Strong repertoire of international service!
Rotarian support and professional development through networking, event planning, and more!
Direct participation through our committees.
Member rewards and online service hour tracking!

II. Rotaract Retreat: Lake Tahoe

When: Saturday, Dec 3rd to Sunday, Dec 4th (Exact times tbd)
Where: Lake Tahoe!
Cost: Est. $90-$100 (but will be lower if we have a lot of participants)
As the semester comes to a close, join Rotaract for a fun-filled weekend in Lake Tahoe for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, or just playing in the snow! The total cost will include transportation, lodging, and food (skiing/snowboarding not included) and a security deposit of $20 is due by next Tuesday so we can book accommodations.

Day of Peace: Lake Merritt Clean Up
Sat. Nov 5 | 8:00AM – 12:00PM | Lakeside Park (Meet at Dwight & Telegraph bus stop)
This Saturday, we will partner with the City of Oakland division of Parks and Recreation to help ongoing volunteer efforts at Lake Merritt. Volunteers will be helping re-establish a CA native wildflower garden near the McElroy Fountain.Afterward, we can snag a yummy lunch around the lake after all your hard work! We will be meeting at 8AM at the Dwight and Telegraph stop for the 1 to Bayfair Bart (South), and busing over together.

Interact Stayover
Sat. Nov 12 to Sun. Nov 13 | time varies | Dwinelle & UC Berkeley Campus
Come share your collegiate wisdom with Interactors from District 5170 this weekend as they come to explore and learn all about UC Berkeley! The variety of things you can do include: telling high school students about your first year experience, your major, leading mini socials, and helping to facilitate the overall event. This is your chance to inspire young students to come to Cal and to fill them in on all the things you wish you knew back as a high school student.

Interact Stayover Scavenger Hunt

Think you have what it takes? Come out to Local Committee’s Scavenger Hunt! (This is a joint event with Rotaract’s Interact Stay-over Program) Meet up at Dwinelle Lobby at 7:30pm sharp and wear comfortable shoes. Ultimate Frisbee Family Tournament & Spaghetti Feed

Apply now for a Rotarian mentor! You will get the chance for one on one mentoring, career planning, life wisdom, and other professional development opportunities per your own individual interests! Applicants will receive more information accordingly. Fill out the attached application and turn it in to any of the Rotaract officers or to the Rotaract Table on Sproul Mon-Thurs from 10AM – 1PM. If you have a specific field you are interested in, please let us know and we will do our to match you to an appropriate mentor!

II. How to Sign Up for Events/Meetings

At each general meeting we will hand out sign-up sheets where you can indicate your interest in events. Please turn them into an officer by the end of the meeting so we can know to email you more information!

If you are not able to come to our general meetings, you can still sign up online! When you read the upcoming events (below), you will see the details for an event as well as the contact information and a link to our event page, which is where you’ll sign up.

1. Click on the event link under event description. Once you reach the event page, you should see “Signups for [Event, Date].”

2. Look for your name on the Dropdown menu. If your name is not on the list, click “[Not on List] and enter your first and last name, email, and phone number. Click on “Add to List” to sign-up for the event or “Remove from List” to remove yourself from the sign-up list.

This event is going to be an amazing, weekend-long beautification project in which we’ll clean up an old property and build a children’s playground on top, from start to finish! Dress in comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. All shifts will receive free lunch!

Rebuilding Together

Do you like to paint and build things? Come out and help renovate the house of an elderly woman who is a widow of a veteran! There will be 2 shifts, and we will be meeting up at the bus stop at Bancroft & Telegraph to head over together.

Family Night
Tues. Sept 20 | 7:00PM – 8:30PM | Location TBA
Come out to join a family within our Fellowship Program! Families are a great way to meet people who share your passion for service, and to bond through friendly competitions. Tournaments in the past have included basketball, volleyball, and even LAN. By joining a family, you will have the opportunity to meet fellow members at a closer, more intimate level. The six families are: The Axels, the Freds, the Gustaves, the Hirams, the Pauls, and the Silvesters. During Family Night, you will get the chance to meet all of the family heads and decide which family is right for you! The Family program is a strong component of Cal Rotaract’s experience, and participation is strongly recommended.

Rotarian Networking Night

International Committee Service Party

Come out and support three great causes: Create WAPIs, Water Pasteurization Indicators, which save the lives of people all over the world by showing them if their water is safe to drink! Get creative and sew stuffed animals for children in Haiti! Support the people devastated by the earthquake in Japan by sending letters of hope through Hope Letters for Japan. Your messages will be translated into Japanese and you will provide encouraging messages to people in this time of need! EVERYONE is welcome!

Local Committee’s Game/Improv Night

Looking for a fun way to spend Friday night (or at least, the beginning of it)? Come out to Local Comm’s first ever game/improv night, where you can compete in a ton of hilarious games and contests! We’ll be setting up (along with help from the Fellowship directors!) some great improv activities a la “Who’s Line”, and there will be a ton of awesome prizes that you can win! Rotary Peace Symposium Volunteer [TIME SENSITIVE]

Attend the last ever symposium of the Rotary-UC Berkeley Peace Fellows—after this year, the UC Berkeley Peace Center closes in July. (It’s also possible to leave early if you would like to participate in the Dodgeball Tournament as well)

District 5160 Retreat: Rotaract into Space!

This 4-hour, mini-retreat is an opportunity to network, meeting Rotaractors and Rotarians in 5160 and learn what this year’s theme, Building Communities, Bridging Continents really means. Rebuilding Together Prep Day

Rebuiding Together is a Non-profit organization that provides free rehabilitation and critical repairs for low-income homes. This project is sponsored by Sears/Heroes at Home and is a fairly major project including interior painting prep, painting, wrapping hot water heater, and safety improvements. If you are planning on volunteering, please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes (including shoes) that you won’t mind getting dirty and/or paint-spattered!

National Rebuilding Together Day

International Committee Crane Folding Event

Come out to learn how to fold cranes, and help raise money for rebuilding Japan! Students Rebuild, an initiative of the Bezos Family Foundation, is donating $2 for every paper crane we mail in! Their goal is 100,000 cranes and $200,000 toward Architecture for Humanity’s support of Japanese rebuilding efforts.

For those of you who have registered, don’t forget to come out to Dance Marathon! Get ready for 12 hours of dancing, entertainment, food, and prizes! It’s going to be a blast! Your registration fee includes free snacks, but raising $15 will get you free meals throughout the night, including Yogurtland, quesadillas, Cheeseboard, and more! And once you raise $50 you will receive raffle tickets for over 30 amazing prizes/prize packages! DOORS CLOSE AT 11PM, and there is NO RE-ENTRY!

III. Register for Dance Marathon!

Dance Marathon (DM) is is an annual campus-wide event that brings students and the community together for a fun-filled night in the fight against Pediatric AIDS. The overnight event includes 12 consecutive hours of dancing, live entertainment, educational activities and speakers, themed activities, free food and exciting contests and prizes! It’s gonna be a blast! The deadline to register is THIS FRIDAY, so don’t delay!

Your $15 Registration fee is all it takes to treat a pregnant mother and prevent transmission of HIV to her child, so just by registering you are saving a child’s life! The deadline to register is THIS FRIDAY! Also, start sending out emails asking for donations from family/friends because if you raise $50, you’ll receive raffle tickets for some awesome raffle prizes such as a Nintendo Wii, Southwest plane tickets, entertainment packages, and MORE!

**When you register, you have the option to either register as a regular Dancer, or a DM VIP. The difference is that DM VIP’s pledge to raise at least $50 and stay the whole night. If you think you can do that, register as VIP so you can get exclusive benefits at the event!**

I. WHY JOIN ROTARACT?

Rotaract is an international service club for individuals between the ages of 18-30. As one of Rotary International’s official youth programs, members of Rotaract clubs (known as Rotaractors), are part of the world’s largest service organization. Rotaractors perform service both locally and internationally, changing the world one person at a time!

For those of you who are still unsure about joining Cal Rotaract, here are some key points to remember as to why we’re different from every other community service club out there!

* Rotarian support and professional development through resume building, interview practice, public speaking, event planning, and more!

International Committee Charity Movie Night + LN-4 Prosthetic Hands Service Event

We’ll kick the night off with a fun mini service event at 7PM, in partnership with the LN-4 Prosthetic Hands Project! Water Writes: Mural Painting Party in Oakland!

Dance Marathon (DM) is is an annual campus-wide event that brings students and the community together for a fun-filled night in the fight against Pediatric AIDS. The overnight event includes 12 consecutive hours of dancing, live entertainment, educational activities and speakers, themed activities, free food and exciting contests and prizes! It’s gonna be a blast!

Your $15 Registration fee is all it takes to treat a pregnant mother and prevent transmission of HIV to her child, so just by registering you are saving a child’s life! The deadline to register is March 18th, but sign up ASAP to start raising money for some awesome raffle prizes!

**When you register, you have the option to either register as a regular Dancer, or a DM VIP. The difference is that DM VIP’s pledge to raise at least $50 and stay the whole night. If you think you can do that, register as VIP so you can get exclusive benefits at the event!**

I. WHY JOIN ROTARACT?

Rotaract is an international service club for individuals between the ages of 18-30. As one of Rotary International’s official youth programs, members of Rotaract clubs (known as Rotaractors), are part of the world’s largest service organization. Rotaractors perform service both locally and internationally, changing the world one person at a time!

For those of you who are still unsure about joining Cal Rotaract, here are some key points to remember as to why we’re different from every other community service club out there!

* Strong repertoire of international service!
* Rotarian support and professional development through resume building, interview practice, public speaking, event planning, and more!

Hello Rotaractors!

A big thank you to everyone who came out to our First General Meeting! Please excuse us for the hectic start – the room was double-booked – but future meetings will run much smoother! I. WHY JOIN ROTARACT?

II. How to Sign Up for Events/Meetings

At each general meeting we will hand out sign-up sheets where you can indicate your interest in events. Turn them in by the end of the meeting so we can know to email you more information!

If you are not able to come to our general meetings, you can still sign up online! When you read the upcoming events (below), you will see the details for an event as well as the contact information and a link to our event page, which is where you’ll sign up.

1. Click on the event link under event description. Once you reach the event page, you should see “Signups for [Event, Date].”

2. Look for your name on the Dropdown menu. If your name is not on the list, click “[Not on List] and enter your first and last name, email, and phone number. Click on “Add to List” to sign-up for the event or “Remove from List” to remove yourself from the sign-up list.

Leadership Symposium
Sat. Feb 5 | 6:45AM – 3:30PM | Pauley Ballroom, MLK Jr. Student Union
Come out and volunteer at the Leadership Symposium! The Leadership Symposium Conference is held to empower students to become leaders in their community. The day is filled with guest speakers, interactive workshops, and performances. Volunteers will work either morning shift (6:45-11:30) to set up the event and prepare registration or afternoon shift (11:30 – 3:30) to facilitate workshops and clean up. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, along with a free T-shirt!
– Morning shift: 6:45-11:30AM
– Afternoon shift: 11:30AM – 3:30PM
**It is highly recommended for you to attend training either on Thursday at 7PM OR Friday at 5PM at 102 Sproul. This training will help you better understand how to facilitate the conference on Saturday.

Family Night

Come out to join a family within our Fellowship Program! Families are a great way to meet people who share your passion for service, and to bond through friendly competitions. Tournaments in the past have included basketball, volleyball, and even LAN. By joining a family, you will have the opportunity to meet fellow members at a closer, more intimate level. The six families are: The Axels, the Freds, the Gustaves, the Hirams, the Pauls, and the Silvesters. During Family Night, you will get the chance to meet all of the family heads and decide which family is right for you! Returning members will have the chance to rejoin the same family, or choose a new family. The Family program is a strong component of Cal Rotaract’s experience, and participation is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

February Outing at Chaparral House
Sat. Feb 12 | 10:00AM – 4:30PM | 1309 Allston Way
Chaparral House, a small skilled nursing facility in central Berkeley, is looking for outing volunteers to help escort some of the elder residents in wheelchairs for the February Outing. Volunteers will accompany seniors to the Oakland Asian Cultural Center: Lunar New Years Festival & Out to Lunch at the Legendary Palace Chinese Restaurant. The festival is free for everyone, but volunteers will have to pay for their own lunch at the restaurant.
**This event is capped! A max of 10 volunteers are needed, so if you would like to participate, sign up ASAP!
