Interns Fall 2018

Interns make up a large part of Cal Rotaract’s internal functions. This semester, Cal Rotaract has recruited eleven interns, each working under one of our Internal Board officers (Historian, Design Chair, Human Relations Chair, and Treasurer, Webmaster). They have worked countless hours to bring you promotional and marketing materials for club events and help increase efficiency of club operations. Whether it be the photos you get tagged in, the banners on Facebook, the financial processes, or even parts of the newsletter, interns offer so much to our club, and we want to recognize them as part of this special edition of Humans of Cal Rotaract. These are some of their experiences.

Jacklyn Gee | Design Intern

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

“It’s been interesting. I really like it because it was a good way to get to know people in the club and contribute even if it’s only a small part.”

What are some difficulties/challenges you faced, or anything new you learned?

“It’s a balancing act between completing projects and doing school work, but it’s manageable (sometimes)!”

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

“For me, not including club activities and just internship wise, I think the meetings with the other interns were most memorable. “

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

“It’s a good refresher of photoshop and since I like art, it’s a good way to do art in a meaningful way. Thanks for great time so far! (p.s. you’re adorable)”

Ningxin Zheng | Design Intern

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

“It’s been wonderful! Jocelyn is always so helpful and encouraging, adjusting for our schedules and varying availabilities. She provides feedback on our designs and gives suggestions on things to consider for future designs.”

What are some difficulties/challenges you faced, or anything new you learned?

“I haven’t experienced significant challenges so far, but I have learned quite a bit! Jocelyn does so much for Cal Rotaract. I didn’t realize how much time went into each banner, each event flyer, and everything else Jocelyn has taken upon herself to complete. I also learned some new techniques and resources for improving my Photoshop designs, making them more concise and aesthetically pleasing. “

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

“I had a great time at our Photoshop workshop at 1951 Coffee Company with the other design interns, Yash and Jacklyn. It was a nice chance to get to know my fellow interns and talk to Jocelyn about her experiences in Photoshop and Illustrator and refresh some basic skills. The environment was also very nice. I also enjoyed late-night study sessions with Jocelyn in Eshleman!”

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

“I realized that so much work goes into creating the beautiful, polished front of Cal Rotaract. All of Jocelyn’s work is so essential to the club, be it advertising for Cal Rotaract or promotion for specific events, such as speakers and fundraisers. Much love to the amazing Jocelyn!

Yash Chainani | Design Intern

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience as an intern. Being an intern has enabled me to become more involved in Cal Rotaract, which is totally awesome because I’ve been able to meet so many new and interesting people at Cal Rotaract while making a difference to the community. I have also been able to pick up design again and I am seriously considering building up a portfolio now for future design works.”

What are some difficulties/challenges you faced, or anything new you learned?

“Learning Photoshop and Illustrator to design infographics was definitely quite a challenge because these softwares are not the easiest to use and are so full of nuances and a wide variety of tools. But that being said, Adobe Photoshop and illustrator are incredibly powerful and working with my design chair Jocelyn, I was able to learn a lot of the cool features that I wouldn’t have been able to on my own.

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

“I guess my favorite memory would be when all of us design interns kept being asked by the other officers to put their names on the preorder forms for the pop-up show and Jocelyn had to kept trying to get us to put her name instead. “

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

“I learnt that being a design chair definitely is no easy task. It requires hours of detailed, careful, precise effort to come up with an appealing banner for a meeting that people would love. I’d like to tell Jocelyn that all the effort she puts in and her fluency with Photoshop and Illustrator is really admirable and thank you so much for teaching me what you know!”

Charlotte Ong | Co Historian/HR Intern

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

“My overall experience this semester as an intern has been memorable. I was able to find a smaller community that was interested in giving back to the community and doing services together. Not only was I able to meet new friends but earned the opportunity to work alongside these friends on different projects and services.”

What are some difficulties/challenges you faced, or anything new you learned?

“Being an intern allowed me to learn from those that are more experienced in photography/videography which for the longest time I have been interested in being involved with. While there are many skills I still need to learn, being apart of the recollection team has created an environment that made me comfortable with asking for help and meeting new people. Learning how to edit is challenging but with enough practice, I will improve in my skills and eventually find my style of editing.”

“What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?”

“My favorite memories from the internship experience would be when I would be editing the photos that I had taken from the events. While editing the photos, I find some worthwhile meme photos. They were not intended to be funny photos but I think candid photos are the best photos since it captures the authenticity of an experience.”

“What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer? ”

“I learned that photography/videography is more than taking photos. There is more behind the scene effort that is required but exciting to participate in. Editing photos and videos can help strengthen the quality of the experience. There is many elements that are required to create a photo that is posted on the facebook page or albums. I want to thank Austin and Allie for helping me step outside of my comfort zone and giving me this experience. It has been great so far to be working with them and being patient with teaching us interns.”

Justine Liang | Treasurer Intern

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

“So far I’m really happy about being an intern because I am encouraged to ask questions and everyone in the treasury team is amazing! I definitely feel like I’m in good hands to learn more about the finance side of the club.”

What are some difficulties/challenges you faced, or anything new you learned?

“Since the subject of finance is still relatively new to me because I have never had experience formally keeping track of every expense and turning in work for reimbursements, I feel like I am learning something new every time we meet and over the course of the weeks. Initially it is a little confusing knowing how to document the transactions so I hope that with more practice, I’ll get the hang of it. “

“What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?”

“My most memorable moment was just bumping into Alejandro and Kelly outside of the classroom before general meeting. It just felt really natural to walk up to them and we would all just talk comfortably. I really appreciate how we get to know one another outside of meetings.”

“What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer? ”

“What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer? ”

“I realized that the entire treasury system really is very intricate and complex. The entire club basically relies on the treasurers to answer any financial questions or issues – which is essential to the overall functioning of Cal Rotaract. I have so much respect for Nikhil and Eric, and I’m truly learning a lot from them. Love y’all!”
